Two counter intuitive things to watch out for

I was reading an article about Nike Air shoes, and it's a great example of how we can be so wrong about something, and just not really care that it is a bad idea because it 'seems' like such a good idea, and even feels like a good idea (short sightedness).  So if you read the article it basically re-iterates that soft soled shoes lead to more injuries, i.e. shoes with air bags in them are not a great idea.  But they seem like a great idea.  I found that interesting and then later I was thinking this is similar to tress not exposed to wind are weak, and then I thought about kids not exposed to difficult situations end up non-functional at university.

So it seems obvious, we do need some hardships in our lives, the question is how much, and how much should we try to control it?

and as a bizarre coincidence as I was thinking about this my ipod cut out and I listened to the radio to hear a joke making fun of a guy who said losing his arm was the best thing that could've ever happened to him (that being the guy from 127 hours)

First a Tim Ferris interview with Alain de Botton on how philosophy change your life.
“We’re not very good at understanding what it is that we really want. We’re extremely prone to latch onto suggestions from the outside world.”

Then I saw a video of a town that went to a lot of trouble to make one person happy, and I think it made them all happy.

This was very influenced by Samsung and their corporate desires, but what do you think it would take for this to happen more often with or without a big corporations.
