Open Letter to Tom Rand (@TomRand)
Dear Mr. Rand,
I don't think any 'tech' is going to wake the frog. We've got technology we're not using, you know that better than most. Our problem is not going that we don't know how to fix things, it's that we are not using the tools we have. To wake the frog you need to figure out why we're not using the tools we have. To me it seems obvious that it is a marketing issue. And that isn't going to be solved until someone figures out a business model to make money on better solutions.
I think the solution is a homo economicus service provider. A company which helps us make the best choices based upon all of the information available to us. Apparently the market economy relies upon us to do this, but individuals are clearly terrible at it. I would market it as a Happiness Service Provider, in order to make it easy to understand, but it's goal would be to help us make the most rational decisions possible, taking all things into consideration. It might seem daunting, but each one of us is trying to do this on our own everyday, so surely we could do better if we teamed up and took advantage of the maven's among us.
This could help us see what really makes us happy, we could stop buying things that don't lead to happiness, put money into energy saving and pollution reducing options, for our wallet and our health. It would be the voice guiding us all day every day to helping us make better decisions, and when it got to a critical mass it could influence corporations and governments overnight.
The key is to rally around one simple, universal goal, Happiness. And drive change in the pursuit of happiness.
No one could stop it because no one could argue against it.
This is what people want. This is what everyone at your talks wants. This is what everyone at every talk like yours wants.
They want to know what to do!
Why not tell them? Why not help them make better decisions all day every day?
You have the audience, you have the resources, you seem to have committed your life to this, why not make the market for the solutions you are backing?
People commit substantial amounts of time to hearing what you have to say, either by going to a talk or reading your books. They look up to you and reach out to you, desperate to know what to do, and you say ... don't eat red meat, ... and um, ... join Canadian for Clean Energy, run by my friend who started Bullfrog Power. These are not great answers. I think the site is actually cleanprosperity.ca and even it is just a sign up and wait, kind of proposition.
My message to you is, give people what they want. Help them make better everyday decisions, and help make it easy, (like car companies make it easy to buy cars we can't afford).
My request of you is to get in touch so I can help you shape this new venture.
If you're not convinced, I challenge you to convince me that you couldn't do this, and that it doesn't have the potential to be more impactful than everything you've done so far, combined.
Sincerly,
@SpontCoop
