Overview
Problem:
People think we need to create new and better solutions, but we really need to figure out why we're not using the solutions we have.
Hypothesis:
I see two main problems:
1. Our global mindset seems to be that there is not enough to go around (not enough for everyone to live well), so you have to aggressively take what you can get and protect it for those close to you (family, friends, community, country). This may have been true in the past, but studies have shown we have the technology to provide everyone a very high standard of living.
2. Large corporations are arguably the most powerful organizations on the planet, and we have legally bound them to operate in such a way that they must maximize profit above all else. That means they must exploit everything they can, break or bend every rule in the book to maximize profit, with no regard for the well being of the planet (humans included).
With these 2 issues in place it is no wonder we are not using our technological advances to work together to make the world work for 100% of humanity. First off we don't think we can spread the wealth without compromising our own standard of living, so we're not going to try. And even if a high ranking individual at a corporation wanted to do something good for the world, the system wouldn't let them.
The Solution:
I don't see the law changing too soon, and the mindset of looking out for yourself is pretty entrenched, so we're going to have to do something that gets around those.
We need something like a corporation, but focused on the customers interests, and the interests of the planet.
So why not create a corporation where everyone on the planet is a shareholder?
And keep the current laws, but measure benefit in ways other than money?
It can still try to maximize the benefit for the shareholders, but this forces it to take care of everyone.
What it could look like:
In practice it could look something like an employment agency.
Anyone can come in and get help finding a job, and part of your pay goes to the agency. But the agency does more than just find you a good job, it helps you with financial planning, with getting a place, getting a car, finding the best insurance and phone plan, and all sorts of things. It gets to know you, what you want and it helps you live your best life.
It could take some money from your wages like a normal employment agency, but it also gets a kick back on everything it helps you buy. The secret to the success is to make all of the clients shareholders. This forces it to actually tries to find you the best solutions, even if that means not buying something, and all of the profits circle back to helping the clients even more since they own the company.
And since this is an employment agency, raking in money, keeping detailed tabs on what everyone is good at, and what everyone wants and needs. The agency could start up its own companies to supply services to the clients, and employ the clients with high paying jobs with great benefits.
Starting out it could help clients find the a rental unit, then it could own the rental units. And as shareholders the clients won't be anxious to become owners because they already are part owner.
So, no protests needed, no legal battles, no complicated wealth redistribution. Just people who want the world to work for 100% of humanity going about their daily lives in such a way that bit-by-bit more and more money & jobs stay within the group (which could scale to include everyone just as easily as facebook).
Leveraging the constructs of a corporation would allow everyone to have a vote, would connect us in a very tangible way (connecting our wallets, we'd benefit from others benefiting).
Theoretically, at some point every company could be owned by this parent company, which everyone on earth is a shareholder of. In turn, solving the conflict of interest corporations face, maximizing benefit of the shareholder at the expense of the customer and environment.
That's could be all there is to it.
A co-op employment agency with the goal to maximize the benefit of its shareholders (in every way possible other than monetary) could create the market for better solutions to thrive.
It could still use all of the constructs we are used to today, like money, and private ownership, different levels of wealth and compensation, but by aiming to have everyone a shareholder, they won't be able to compromise others peoples happiness for their own benefit. Studies have shown people from all backgrounds have similar ideas on wealth distribution, and they are ok with a % of people at each level, but no one thinks 40% of the population should have nothing like we have today (see chart).
