Yann Dall'Aglio has a great TED talk which goes over a very useful definition which gives insights into our desire to accumulate things.
The way to think about Love is to think about it as desirability. We are all trying to remain desired, and not just by our true love, but by everyone. In the past it was much easier when there were cultural rules to follow, and we could be assured to be desired if we followed them. But now it's not clear what to do because there are no rules to follow. That's why we accumulate things, not to have them but to increase our desirability capital.
As I type this the ideas don't seem that profound, but if you think about it as you go through your day you may see how this shapes our lives and influences us to do what we do. It really shows the importance of our culture and shared values in order to know what to do and to feel loved.
